The company was founded in 1923 and is a subsidiary of the company Ahold from Amsterdam, an international retail company. The store had a humble beginning with a butcher shop operated by two men. The underlying promise of the shop is to provide everyone the best product at the best price for the customers. The owner David Javitch was so committed to the business that he spent his time always in the store, so much so that he raised his children also there. While Giant Food started as a butcher shop, the owner then bought a grocery store in 1936 which sold both perishable and dry goods under one roof. This concept was new and marked a new beginning in the grocery food store industry. The earlier meat market was also converted to a full flung grocery store making the first step towards success. During the 70s, Giant Food further purchased a chain of grocery stores by the name Martin’s and expanded further. The Martin’s continue to operate under the same name, but are subsidiary to the Giant Food stores. Currently the company has more than 180 stores and 90 gas stations spread across the 4 states in the east including their subsidiary Martin’s.
