An American supermarket chain in the state of North Carolina, the Harris Teeter has nearly 240 stores under its belt operating across seven states of the America. They were ranked among the top 75 retailers and wholesalers in 2012. The company was started in 1936 as Harris super market, during the Great depression in Charlotte by William Thomas Harris. To start with the store only had dry goods and not frozen or fresh produce as part of it until the Second World War. The store later joined hands with the Teeter’s Food mart, opened in 1939 by Willis Teeter and became the Harris teeter in 1960, the largest grocery organization in Carolina. It was the first store which introduced the concept of self shopping where the customers can choose what they want from the shelves by themselves. Another first for the store was that it was open until 9 pm even on Fridays when most of the stores closed earning them more revenue and a good reputation among the late shoppers. It was also the first store in Charlotte to have air conditioning. The store also started expanding into other products like school supplies, kitchen tools, beauty and health care products, seasonal items like coolers for summer, etc. Teeter’s were the first to have automated doors to the supermarket as well. Thanks to their success, they have multiple stores across states requiring multiple job positions to be filled in.
