Job Description

Position Summary:

The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Chemist I are highly technical and include the following:

  • Performance of incoming testing on packaging and ingredient commodities per current methodology
  • Planning, sampling, testing, audit of records and release of ingredients and packaging materials
  • Accurately interpreting sampling plans, conducting testing and inspecting materials for defects
  • Accurately updating computer tracking/inventory systems
  • Maintaining laboratory testing equipment
  • Following all safety rules during completion of tasks
  • Comply with all GMP, GLP and safety requirements

Main Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system
  • Conduct aseptic ingredient sampling which consists of opening ingredient containers, sampling, documentation and distribution of samples per acceptance procedures
  • Conduct raw ingredient analysis which includes: potentiometric titrations, Infra-Red spectrophotometry, polarimetry, moisture testing, organoleptic testing, sediment testing, USP and FCC testing, etc.
  • Conduct and document packaging testing per acceptance procedures
  • Complete appropriate documentation, audit and release of commodities
  • Enters ingredient and packaging material data into Vendor Tracking, MITS, etc.
  • Complete housekeeping responsibilities such as washing glassware, waste disposal, general laboratory sanitation, etc.
  • Demonstrate accountability and responsibility for EHS performance and compliance through active participation and support of Abbott’s EHS Program


The Assistant Chemist I reports directly to the Lab Supervisor/Front Line Leader and must be able to work with minimal supervision. The incumbent is responsible for complying with applicable FDA (GMP), USDA, OSHA and Abbott regulations, policies, procedures or guidelines. A serious error could result in a Corporate compliance observation, in an FDA product recall, batch destruct or even a serious health risk.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Math or closely related technical field, OR, High school diploma with 1 year of college chemistry and mathematics plus 2 years of related laboratory or plant experience
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions, follow written directions, prepare simple reports and read and record gauge and display readings
  • Mathematics knowledge and basic statistical comprehension
  • Ability to lift and push packages up to 60 lbs. in addition to normal sampling and laboratory work
  • This individual will recognize and report method procedure problems, out-of-specification conditions and report to supervision
  • Must be able to identify issues with test methods
  • Ability to recognize potential threats to product quality
  • Responsible for detecting and correcting documentation errors
  • Strong teamwork and ability to work with plant personnel in other departments
