Research Laboratory Technician I-Pharnacology (JYH)

Under general supervision, provides a wide variety of laboratory testing and technical lab support for a research facility. Requires knowledge of the processes/procedures in testing, documenting experiments, maintaining laboratory notebook, analyzing data, and reporting using complex statistical computer software.

Specifically, this role will investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of neurological diseases and disorders such as stroke, Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, and identify novel therapeutic targets for these devastating diseases with a focus on the role of epigenetic regulation and microRNAs, and on protein regulation and degradation such as ubiquitination and autophagy.

This lab is located within the Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience. This is a brand-new laboratory supported by start-up funds as well as extramural research grants. The lab space is newly renovated and consists of culture work, molecular work and animal work spaces. The Department also has the facilities and fully support all research activities in the laboratory. The facilities provide resources to utilize a variety of approaches including confocal biomedical imaging, flow cytometry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, vivarium, behavioral studies and animal surgery.

Ideal candidate will be highly self-motivated and be able to work independently as well as in a team. Previous experience in rodent surgery is required. Selected candidate should be able to discuss with PI or other scientist the design, execute and troubleshoot experiments and to analyze and interpret results. Opportunities will be provided to participate in writing manuscripts and scientific reports. Lab management will be mainly handled by Technician; laboratory equipment purchasing, maintenance and request for repairs, processing laboratory supply orders, rodent colony maintenance, laboratory license applications such as animal protocol and IBC protocol.

This position will work Monday to Friday, 8am-4:30pm, position will require, at times, evening, weekend, and holiday work.

Associate's degree in related field of Science required;
Bachelor's Degree in in areas of neuroscience, biology, biochemistry or a related field preferred;
0-1 year's research lab experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Hands-on experience on advanced biochemistry, molecular and cell biology techniques with a variety of in vitro and in vivo models of neurological disorders and disease;
Previous experience in rodent surgery;
Previous experience in primary neuronal cell and cell line culture;
Previous experience in surgical global ischemia model (4-vessel occlusion) and/or MCAO model preferred;
Strong experience with a confocal microscopy and imaging analysis preferred;
Experience with GWAS, behavioral studies, or electrophysiology is a plus;
Ability to work independently as well as in a team;
Strong verbal and written communication skills;
Understanding of research methods, laboratory techniques, and care of laboratory equipment; Ability to interpret data, troubleshoot and resolve technical issues;
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Excel; PowerPoint and Outlook;
Detail oriented;
Analytical skills;
Strong work ethic, excellent written and communication skills, and the ability to work independently;
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays depending upon research needs
