Job Description:

The Leidos Surface Transportation Solutions Portfolio is seeking a Technical Communications Specialist to provide support for an array of technical and outreach products developed for the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT), State Departments of Transportation (DOTs), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The primary responsibility of the Technical Communications Specialist will be to support Leidos technical staff in the development of technical and research reports, guidance documents, marketing flyers, noteworthy practices, and other written materials. This position requires advanced knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and usage and superb writing skills. The successful candidate will be required to juggle multiple task order deliverables concurrently, prioritize workflow, and work closely with a team of communications and engineering subject matter experts to advance product development.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Editing documents to ensure correct grammar, punctuation, usage, and consistency with customer-mandated style guidelines.
  • Revising documents to ensure customer format and layout requirements are met, and providing white-glove review of printer's proofs to ensure correct presentation.
  • Working with engineering subject matter experts, data scientists, and Federal customers to develop outreach materials for audiences at the State agency level.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate must have at least 5 years of experience editing and writing technical documents, preferably those in the surface transportation, civil engineering, or public policy domain. The successful candidate also must have experience implementing editorial style guides for deliverable products.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/SKILLS: Bachelors' degree in Communications, Marketing, Business, English, or Public Policy. The following skills are required for this position:
  • Highly proficient in grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Fluency with the GPO Style Manual and Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Expertise in all standard Microsoft Office tools and programs.
  • Strong experience in backend print publication processes.

  • Prior experience working in an engineering discipline.
  • Ability to perform well under the pressure of multiple competing deadlines.
  • Highly proactive, self-motivated, and has sharp self-time management.
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized, and has a strong ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Ability to think analytically and apply general concepts to other applicable topics.

Respondents should be prepared to provide three writing samples illustrating their skills in different types of written products (e.g., one newsletter or journal article, one technical memo, one guide or report).
