Fabricates all types of dental prostheses as directed by dentists.


Plans approach to problems posed by requests using such things as the impression and description, standard fabrication practices, ingenuity, anatomical understanding, knowledge of casting and model making tools, equipment, procedures and materials and consultation with the requesting General Dentistry Dentist or Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Receives and studies impressions of patients' mouths and accompanying written work statements and descriptions from General Dentistry Dentist or Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon to determine nature and scope of the required work and to identify potential casting and fabrication problems.

Instructs and demonstrates to dental students use of all materials, tools, and equipment used in making models and dental prostheses.

Fabricates a wax and acrylic impression tray from the model to enable General Dentistry Dentist or Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon to take a more accurate second impression.

Prepares impression for sculptural type casting by cutting away excess material and smoothing impression without altering vital relationships.

In some fracture and radical surgery cases, builds up malformations in the impression in three dimensions using knowledge of anatomy to restore normal relationships.

Casts sculptural model from impression in powdered materials such as plaster and stone using standard procedures and tools of model making.

Fabricates orthodontic devices employing a variety of devices such as springs and specially designed configurations of wire to pull teeth into proper place.

Maintains records by logging, monitoring and tracking fabrication and lab cases.

Fabricates, using standard or vacuum techniques, upper and lower dentures using rigid and non-rigid type material, selects teeth indicated by the General Dentistry Dentist or Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon, grinds and polishes surfaces, bakes and cures dentures, and cleans with ultrasonic devices.

Fabricates partial dentures using a surveyor to determine alignment, selecting anchor point, judging pressure on plate, pouring and casting gold alloy; bends, cuts, and fits wire frames and clasps.

Fabricates prognathic and micrognathic splints under pressures of accuracy and time using methods described above.

Responsible for cleaning dental lab equipment, ordering and maintaining sufficient dental lab supplies, and making sure the dental lab is well cared for.


OPTION I - *Completion of two years' course work in dental technician study at an accredited school, including course work in partial denture constructions.

  • One year of journey-level, experience** in the independent fabrication of full and partial dentures and splints.

    • PHYSICAL CLASS: – Light II: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

    • In order to qualify under Option I of the Minimum Requirements, you must include a legible copy of your official transcripts to verify proof of completion of the required courses with your application at the time of filing or within fifteen (15) calendar days from filing online.

    • Applications received without evidence of the required course will be rejected for not meeting the requirements.

      **Journey-level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills, and training to perform a full-range and diversity of work independently and reliably. Positions at this level operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulation, or applying proper procedures to carry out work

      Additional credit will be given to applicants who possess desirable qualifications in excess of the Selection Requirements:

      An active, valid certificate issued by the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology in the form of a Certified Dental Technician designation.

      Applicants must attach a photocopy of the required license or certificate to your application at the time of filing online, fax or email the required license to us within fifteen (15) calendar days from the date of filing your application online. Applications submitted without the required license and certification will be rejected as incomplete. The original license and certification must be presented during the selection process and prior to appointment.


    Examination Content:
    This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience; and desirable qualifications based on application information, weighted 100%.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    Eligibility Information:
    Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    The names of candidates receiving a passing score on the examination will be added to the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

    Special Information:
    Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
