Scientific and Engineering Technician

Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford’s marine laboratory in Pacific Grove, is looking for a Senior Scientific and Engineering Technician to support our diverse research and teaching needs. We are a community of 10 faculty and 30 graduate students/postdocs who conduct research on a wide variety of ocean-related topics—from single cells to blue whales, genetics to ecosystems—and provide undergraduate students with hands-on education in marine biology. These activities require the support of an individual with a broad background in both the electronic and mechanical aspects of scientific instrumentation; a person willing and able to work creatively with faculty and students to turn ideas into working scientific apparatus. More broadly, the technician will join the rest of the Hopkins community in sharing the responsibilities entailed in operating a marine research laboratory 90 miles from main campus.

The skills we desire include:

A good working knowledge of analog electronics: instrumentation and operational amplifiers, servo- and feedback control systems; ability to troubleshoot circuits and interpret and generate schematic diagrams.
Familiarity with transducer technology, and the ability to select and use appropriate devices to measure temperature, light, flow, and other aspects of the natural environment.

A good working knowledge of digital electronics: implementation of digital logic circuitry and analog-to-digital converters, ability to design and build interfaces to computers and microcontrollers, ability to incorporate microprocessor technology in scientific instrumentation, understanding of serial interfaces.
A good working knowledge of programming: understanding of general programming concepts, ability to write data acquisition and control software in high-level language, understanding of coding for web interfaces.
Ability to communicate effectively with faculty and students and train them in basic electronics.


Broad experience in the design and construction of scientific instruments.
Good working knowledge of machine tools, especially the vertical mill and horizontal lathe.

Ability to write G code for our CNC milling machine.

Ability to train faculty and students in standard fabrication techniques and the safe use of machine tools.


A good working knowledge of wired and wireless networks: ability to add wired connections, liaison with campus networking staff, maintain local network databases and maps.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

Five years’ of related work experience or demonstrated ability or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Working knowledge of an expanded list of tools and test equipment in applications that are more complex and with greater precision than that required for the S&E Technician.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Basic computer skills and demonstrated experience with office software and email applications.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Design capabilities must be strong enough to recommend or make improvements in techniques, operations, and procedures. Employees at this level must possess an ability to keep abreast of state-of-the-art developments in their area(s) of specialty.
  • Possess an ability to provide guidance to, and coordinate with, other workers. Illustrative examples of the more advanced skills required in the electronic and mechanical categories are given below
  • Working knowledge of AC and DC circuit theory, Ohm's law, impedance calculation, and simple logic circuits. Ability to use oscilloscopes (including all controls), and an understanding of the limitations of various models (e.g., frequency response)
  • Demonstrated experience using: signal generators producing wave forms of various shapes, amplitudes, frequencies, and rise and fall times, test equipment for measurement of voltage, current, frequency, impedance, and other electrical quantities.
  • Hand tools such as soldering iron, wire wrap gun, electric drill, hole punch, and other small power tools.
  • Working knowledge of shop math and the ability to calculate cumulative tolerances and interferences
  • Working knowledge of the characteristics and properties of various metals and non-metallic materials; use of hand tools such as drill, saw and sander.
  • Some knowledge of specialized equipment such as helium leak detectors; brazing, soldering, TIG welding; rigging equipment; semiconductor fabrication equipment is desirable.
  • Measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, stress gauges, vacuum and pressure gauges, and temperature measurement devices.
  • Ability to make engineering measurements using appropriate instrumentation. May include: microwave measurements of frequency, voltage standing wave ratios, Q, and reflection coefficients.
  • Ability to operate electronic equipment analyzers interpret the results. For example, network analyzer, logic analyzer, and oscilloscope.
  • Ability to download codes to embedded systems and programmable logic controllers.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work
  • Perform desk based computer tasks, use tools, lift and carry 10, 11-20, 21-40 pounds
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, climb/twist/bend/ stoop, squat, reach/work above shoulders, use light/fine grasping, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, scrub/sweep/mop/chop/mix, operate foot and or hand controls
  • Must have good corrected vision, generally fit, dexterous
  • Ability to operate power tools, cranes, machine tools, rigging
Working Conditions
  • May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including Holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.
  • May be required to wear clean room suit or other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • May be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, allergens, biohazards, chemicals, asbestos, solvents, heavy metals, temperature extremes, both hot and cold
  • May work in confined spaces, at heights of 4-10 feet and over 10 feet
