    Summary

    This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration in Office of the Chief of Staff, Research and Development (R&D) Service in the National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research (NCRAR) at the VA Portland Health Care System in Portland, Oregon.

    Responsibilities

    As a Health Science Specialist you will support analysis and reporting of data associated with multiple research studies involving the effects of various experimental auditory rehabilitation interventions (e.g., therapeutic devices and/or treatment strategies) on hearing loss and/or tinnitus. Impairments associated with auditory dysfunction make up 13% of all disabilities among Veterans receiving service-connected compensation. The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Recruitment and enrollment of study participants for clinical trials;
    • Coordinate multidisciplinary research teams;
    • Collaborate with Principal Investigators in pioneering research on the diagnosis, assessment, rehabilitation and prevention of auditory dysfunction;
    • Performing data management, analysis and reporting;
    • Drafting of presentations and publications for scientific peer-review;
    • Performing other related duties as assigned.
    Work Schedule: Part-Time Work Schedule - Wednesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

    NOTE: This is a part-time position (24 hours/week). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.

    NOTE: This is a TERM appointment not-to-exceed 4 years. Term appointments are non-status, non-permanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.

    Qualifications

    This position requires a basic education requirement as follows: All applicants must meet this Basic Requirement for the GS-601 series. You must possess a Bachelor's degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university in a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position.     In addition, you must meet one of the following requirements:

    You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-7) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Health Science Specialist. Specialized experience is experience assisting Principal Investigators in carryout out human subject research; coordinating administrative activities for healthcare related research to include duties such as: recruiting, screening, and evaluating candidates for research studies; collecting, analyzing, managing, and documenting data, results, and findings; operating and maintaining databases; utilizing statistical software programs; and preparing reports. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. - OR -

    You must have successfully completed two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of a Health Science Specialist.     You must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education (beyond the first year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must have provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of a Health Science Specialist (as described above).     This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job).     Physical Requirements: The work is mainly sedentary with some walking, lifting, pushing and standing. Because the research may involve disabled and/or hospitalized research subjects, this position occasionally requires the ability to assist individuals, if needed, during interactions (e.g., with transfers) and/or interventions.

    Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
