River Island started its beginnings as an odds and ends store in London in the year 1948. Bernard Lewis founded the company with his two brothers and converted the concept of the store to include sale of clothes. Initially the company was operating under the name Lewis Separates and later as Chelsea Girl in the early to mid 60s.By the year 1965, the store has 70 outlets to its credit under the moniker Chelsea Girl. The Lewis Trust Group formed in the 1970s to oversee various operations of the business including the retail side, gave birth to a new store called the Concept Man. River Island came into existence in the year 1982. Later the two brands Concept Man and the Chelsea Girl were merged in the year 1988 by the Lewis brothers to open the now moniker River Island. River Island now has more than 300 shops across United Kingdom and rest of the world and is continuously growing into other potential markets. The retail chain sells a whole gamut of clothing lines for everyone including children in every size and style possible. It also deals in other accessories like wallets, bags, footwear, sunglasses, watches, hats, jewelry, etc. There is also an exclusively designed fashion line by R&B Rihanna in the stores of River Island.
